VERY HEAVY HELLENISTIC GOLD RING WITH COMIC ACTOR
Ca. 200 BC. A gold 23 ct ring with a D-section hoop enlarged on the shoulders to form an oval bezel securing a carnelian intaglio depicting an old bald man with a large belly. It is probably a theatre comic actor resting on a wooden stick. For similar see: Christie's Live Auction, 9599, Antiquities, 13 May 2003, Lot 104. Size: D:16.31mm / US: 5 3/4 / UK: L; Weight: 27g. Provenance: Private UK collection, acquired on the US art market; Ex. New York City Collection, purchased from Suzanne Khayat, NYC. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
