MEROVINGIAN SILVER-GILT RADIANT BROOCH
Ca. AD 480 - 530. A silver-gilt brooch with engraved motifs on its main section. The brooch has a rectangular central part with a prominent ridge and meander patterns. The bottom of the design is shaped like a stylised animal muzzle, while the top is hemispherical and adorned with a geometric line pattern. The brooch is topped with five protruding knots. For similar see: Early Merovingian Women’s Brooches, Max Martin, n. 20.7 , p. 229. Provenance: London collection; Ex. Mayfair collection, acquired from an Ancient Art gallery; formerly acquired on the London art market pre-2000. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
