Early 18th Century Dutch Tin-Glazed Earthenware Passover Plate
18th century tin-glazed earthenware Passover plate, Delft, the Netherlands.
Decorated with a foliate design in light blue, the Hebrew word "Pesach" (Passover) is written in black letters in the center of the plate, indicating its use for the week long holiday.
At the beginning of the 17th century, the Dutch East India Company imported large quantities of Chinese porcelain, revolutionizing the pottery industry. Kitchen utensils, decorative with blue-and-white glazes in the Chinese style. The Dutch city of Delft was the European center for the manufacture of these Chinese imitation ceramic wares until the mid-18th century.
