Judaea, Hasmoneans. Alexander Jannaios (Yehonatan), Overstruck on earlier prutah type - with the LiLy. 103-76 BC. (Æ) bronze Prutah Jerusalem Mint. Weight 2.84 gram, Size 15 mm.
Descriptions of the type :
Hebrew legend translated: “Yonatan the High Priest and the Council of the Jews” in classic style paleo-Hebrew within wreath / Two cornucopias with pomegranate between.
The coin was overstrucked on an earlier type of Alexander Jannaios (Yehonatan) prutah, which included Lily and most important the title "KING" in Hebrew. We may assume that the overstruck was made to delete the title "King". Following the Bible the title "King" could bear only a person who belongs to Davidic Dynasty.
This kind of recall of the coins and overstruck during the same ruler was probably the most massive in the ancient world.
