Gontcharova was a Russian painter, illustrator and set designer of the early half of the twentieth century. Originally from a noble family, she first studied medicine, then history and in 1898 entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture where she concentrated on painting. Here he met the painter Michail Larionov, together they will create an artistic-sentimental partnership that will last a lifetime. He had important contacts with the Russian avant-garde and with characters such as Kazimir Malevich, pioneer of geometric abstraction together with Vasilij Kandinskij, and Nikolaj Rjabušinskij. In 1906 at an exhibition of Russian painters at the Salon d'Automne in Paris where he came into contact with the painting of the Impressionists, the Fauves and the Russian figurative tradition. Establish me also with the futurist avant-garde when in April 1914, in Rome, he visited the exhibition Free International Futurist Exhibition. When Larionov published the Manifesto of the Rayon movement in 1913, he showed a strong decorative trait and a marked dependence on Byzantine and Oriental inspiration. The works of this period are distinguished by their material density. In his works the objects are not represented according to conventional principles, but are represented as luminous rays. The last years of his life the artist devoted himself to scenography, theatrical costumes and book illustration.
