Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) was responsible for many innovations in photography at the start of the 20th Century. His most significant accomplishment was the development of an early process for creating color images by means of a camera that could take three negatives of a scene, each made through a color filter. The positive transparencies would be projected through a special apparatus that put each through an appropriate filter, thus creating a brilliant colored image. The major work using this process was an extensive survey of the vast Russian Empire commissioned by Tsar Nicolas II, from 1909 to 1915. The political turmoil preceding the 1917 Revolution and the outbreak of WWI led to the suspension of the project. Prokudin-Gorskii eventually ended in Paris where he operated a studio with his sons. In 1948 his sons donated his surviving material to the Library of Congress, that included a large collection of negatives, and a number of albums containing albumen prints, as well as much else. Images are presented in their original form and represent a significant milestone in the history of color photography.
