Inuit Inupiaq Yup'ik Carved Spiritual Artifact
Figural doll carved presumably from fossilized/semi-fossilized walrus bone/tusk possibly depicting a European or Russian person, likely a whaling ship's captain, the incising details show the figure wearing Western clothing with jacket lapels and buttons. There is a hole drilled through the head of the figure, possibly for stringing to be worn on a necklace. Estimated age is around 175 years old, as first Russian contact was made in the 18th C and European and American whaling was around the mid 19th C. This figure was excavated at Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island, AK, by Native Inuit people. Carving measures approx. 4" long.
