A GLAZED CERAMIC VASE
Korea, Joseon dynasty, 19th century
24,5 cm high
Provenance: Ambassador Francesco Rausi.
The strength of this vase is all in its imperfections. Starting from the form, which undermines any assumption of obstinate symmetry, oscillating between the right and the left of a hypothetical central axis.
The glaze then appears magmatic, in a dynamism of white and light blue clods and the pasty dryness of the white earth. Even the iron burns towards the shoulder and on the neck indicate the way to appreciate a certain Korean ceramic: admire this vase as if it were a fruit, a creation in which nature and the skilful work of man have played an equal part.
