Russian silver Kovsh d’Honneur - 20th century

Large helmet-shaped Kovsh d'Honneur entirely decorated with stylised foliate scrolls and mythological animals, bearing a Cyrillic perimeter inscription below the upper rim. Shaped nephrite handle with applied imperial eagle and bottom entirely decorated with inscriptions.
A characteristic object of Russian silverware, it was produced from the 16th century to the beginning of the 20th century, mainly in silver, often gilded and with engraved decorations or inscriptions. The kovshk d'Honneur in question, echoes the models in use in Russia in the 17th and 18th centuries, although in this case the dimensions are truly exceptional. Hallmarked with the apocryphal hallmarks of the District Administration of the Russian city of St. Petersburg for silver at a fineness of 84 zolotniks (875/1000) in use at the end of the 19th century, and with the apocryphal hallmark of the silversmith Pavel Akimovitch Ovtchinnikov (1830-1888) active in St. Petersburg from 1873 and in Moscow from 1853 to 1917. Also hallmarked with the marks in use in Russia since 1958 for silver at a fineness of 84 zolotniks (875/1000)
Dimensions:22 x 43 (with handle) x 23.5 cm. Weight 2990 g.
Item condition grading: **** good.
