Peter Schenk the Elder (1660–1711) – Map of Antwerp on the Scheldt / Antverpia, Brabantiae ad Scaldim – Belgium (1709)
”Antverpia”This engraved city plan depicts Antwerp (Antverpia), a fortified city on the Scheldt River in the Brabant region. The map shows the city’s star-shaped bastion walls and surrounding defensive structures, with a clear street layout and fortified citadels on both sides of the river. The original Latin and Dutch captions mention that the city was reinforced with a castle by Philip II of Spain and that this view was featured in the cartographic work Hecatompoli. The map was published by Peter Schenk the Elder in Amsterdam. Peter Schenk the Elder was a German-Dutch engraver and map publisher active in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He was known for his atlases and city views, often produced in collaboration with Gerard Valck. His work played a major role in documenting European urban and military topography. This map was printed in Amsterdam in 1709.Artist or Maker:Peter Schenk the ElderDimensions:20 cm x 18 cmMedium:EngravingDate:1709Condition Report:This work is in good condition overall.
