Originally based on the discoveries of James Cook and other 18th-century navigators, the map records geographic features, soundings, and navigational hazards as observed by early European explorers. The insets in the upper right provide close-up views of the Bay of Islands and Tolaga Bay, key landing sites for Cook’s first voyage.The chart was produced by the French Royal Hydrographer Jacques-Nicolas Bellin and engraved under the supervision of the royal publisher, Bernard, for the "Histoire Générale des Voyages".
