THE MALACH/RAV CHAIM AVROHOM DOV BER HAKOHEN LEVINE Handwritten letter to his son Rav Avrohom Chaim Dov Ber Hakohen Levine (1860-1938), was known as the Malach (‘the angel’) during his later years in the United States, due to his otherworldly piety. He was a talmid of the rebbe Maharas"h of Lubavitch. Upon emigrating to New York, Levine became a unique spiritual mentor in the religious development of many American youth, especially those studying in Yeshiva Torah Vodaas. After his passing, R' Yaakov Shor, brother of R' Gedalya, was appointed his successor. Reb Refael Zalman Levine, studied in Kamenitz under R. Baruch Ber Lebowitz and later attended R. Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (Yeshiva University). He settled in Albany, where he married Fannie Horowitz, the daughter of a local area rabbi. His father, the Malach, sent a steady stream of letters to his son with guidance, beseeching him to prioritize the learning of Torah and guiding him as to which rabbinic texts to focus on. When Reb Boruch Ber came to America, he stayed at the home of Reb Rafael Zalman for 10 days. The present letter forms a part of this highly prized spiritual correspondence.

הגאון הקדוש רבי חיים אברהם דובער הכהן לעווין (נפטר: תרח"צ) הנודע בשם "המלאך". תלמיד האדמו"ר מהר"ש מליובאוויטש, בא לארה"ב, ויסד את בית המדרש וישיבת "נתיבות עולם", בה קיבץ סביבו קבוצה של בחורי הישיבה ואברכים שהקדישו את כל חייהם לתורה ועבודה עם שמירה בקנאות ובדביקות על כל קוץ וקוץ של יהדות ותורה וחסידות, עד שנקראו בפי הבריות "המלאכים" . היה דמות נערצת על תלמידיו, אשר תיארהו " מלאך ה' צבאות". נפטר בבראנקס ניו יארק בשבועות שנת תרצ"ח, ואת מקומו מילא הרהגה"ח רבי יעקב שור זצ"ל אחיו של הג"ר גדלי' שור ראש ישיבת תורה ודעת.

בנו הרב החסיד רפאל זלמן הכהן לעווין, בהיותו כבן 11-12 למד עמו אביו הקדוש את כל ספר התניא. למד בבחרותו אצל הגאון רבי ברוך בער לייבאוויץ, בישיבת "כנסת בית יצחק" בתקופת ווילנא. בתקופת שהותו של רבו רבי ברוך בער בארה"ב, התארח אצל תלמידו זה בעיר אלבאני, כעשרה ימים, וסיפורים רבים הובאו בשמו מביקור זה.
