A RUSSIAN ST. GEORGE CROSS 2ND CLASS IN GOLD, 19TH/20TH CENTURY
The medal is a gold cross with a miniature relief image of Saint George on a horse slaying a dragon in the center. On the reverse are the Cyrillic letters "SG" between two arms bearing the SN24413 and above the bottom arm with the designation 2nd Class (in Russian).
The Cross of Saint George is a state decoration of the Russian Federation. It was initially established by Imperial Russia where it was officially known as the Decoration of the Military Order of Saint George between 1807 and 1913. It was intended as a reward for "undaunted courage" by the military's lower ranks (soldiers, sailors, and NCOs).
