A JAPANESE WAKIZASHI WITH GILT-BRONZE FITTINGS, CA 19TH CENTURY
A Japanese wakizashi with a scabbard of black lacquered wood as well as blackened metal fittings with beautifully contrasting gilt sections throughout. The tsuba in particular is beautifully decorated with cast. moulded, and incised decoration with architectural, floral, and zoomorphic motifs. The menuki are both of florally inspired shapes, while the pommel, the handle of the kozuka, and the section below the tsuba are all decorated with zoomorphic and mythological designs.
Japan, 19th century, Edo or Meiji Period.

Condition: In good condition overall except for the wrappings which have suffered from dry rot and disintegrated along much of the upper half of the handle. Some loss to the lacquer of the scabbard.
