A TOLEDO, SPAIN SAIL DAGGER WITH CHASED GUARD, 19 CENTURY
A Spanish-style sail dagger comprised primarily of steel. The slender blade has many decorative notches cut into it and a raised midrib running the entire length of the blade on both its front and back. The sail-shaped handguard is decorated with an embossed depiction of a soldier wearing a visored helmet and a scale-mail chest piece as well as foliate imagery throughout. Projecting from underneath the sail guard are two twisted-steel quillons ending in half-dome finials. The handle of the dagger is chain-wrapped in a spiraling pattern and is capped off by a squat, almost pumpkin-shaped pommel with spiral grooves.
Spain, 19th Century.
