Correspondances, factures et contrats d’assurance, concernant des œuvres d’artistes tels que Besnard, Bonnard, Boudin, Blanche Carolus-Duran, Carrière, Cézanne, Corot, Courbet, Daumier, Degas, Delacroix, Denis, Dinet, Fantin-Latour, Forain, Flandrin, Gauguin, Henner, Ingres, Lebasque, Manet, Marquet, Matisse, Millet, Monet, Moreau, Picasso, Pissarro, Puvis de Chavannes, Puy, Renoir, Rodin, Roll, Roussel, Signac, Sisley, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Dongen, Van Gogh, Whistler, etc.
Riche armateur japonais, fils d’un premier ministre de l’ère Meiji, Matsukata Kôjirô se constitua une fabuleuse collection d’art français avec pour ambition de créer un musée dans son pays. La crise financière et la guerre vinrent ruiner son projet. Sa collection fut conservée à Londres et à Paris durant l’entre-deux-guerres, mais la partie londonienne disparut dans un incendie en 1939, tandis que la partie parisienne fut mise sous séquestre en 1944 – elle ne fut restituée au Japon qu’en 1953 à la suite de longues tractations.
La collection Matsukata constitua le noyau de l’actuel Musée national d’Art occidental à Tokyo, bâti par Le Corbusier.
