Georges Simenon. French-speaking Belgian writer.
Author of detective novels. He is notably the creator of the character of Inspector Maigret, which earned him international fame. He is one of the most translated French-speaking authors in the world.
Having started at the age of 16 as a journalist at the Gazette de Liège, he left Belgium in 1922 to settle in France, first in Paris, then later in the provinces. He travelled throughout Europe and Africa, from where he brought back reports for the mainstream press. From 1945, he lived in America (Canada, United States).
In 1952, he was admitted to the Royal Academy of Belgium and returned to Europe permanently in 1955. He eventually settled permanently in French-speaking Switzerland.
