CARTER HOWARD: (1874-1939) English Archaeologist and Egyptologist who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922.
Rare draft A.L.S., with his initials H.C., one page, 8vo, Princes Gate Gardens (although on the printed stationery of Collingham Gardens), 9th May 1932, to [Marc Aurel?] Stein. Carter's retained draft is written in bold pencil and he informs his correspondent that he has just returned to London and found their letter regarding 'the photos of the Tutankhamun materials', continuing 'The moment I….am able to get at the material I will send you the photos available - this I trust will be in a week or so'. Autographs of Carter are rare in any form, and the present example is particularly desirable for its reference to Tutankhamun. Two very small pinholes and slight rust stains to the upper left corner, not affecting the text or signature, VGThe recipient of Carter's letter may well have been Sir Marc Aurel Stein (1862-1943) Hungarian-British Archaeologist.Howard Carter gained worldwide fame in November 1922 with his discovery of the intact tomb of the 18th Dynasty Pharaoh Tutankhamun, perhaps the most famous figure associated with Ancient Egypt and certainly the world's most famous Pharaoh.
