Hugo very kindly and politely explains to his correspondent that he has never expressed any negative opinion about him, stating ` Comment avez-vous pu supposer un seul instant, monsieur, qu'une parole disgracieuse pour vous ait pu sortir de ma bouche? Permettez-moi de vous gronder. Je ne vous connais que comme un jeune homme des mieux nés et des mieux doués, et tout en vous annonce la grâce, l'esprit et la loyauté. Comment aurais-je pu avoir un seul moment une intention blessante pour vous? Ma conscience est là-dessus bien tranquille et je ne trouve en moi que votre éloge…´ (“How could you suppose, even if only for a moment, sir, that a disgraceful word about you could have come from me?
