A KASHAN PIERCED AND INCISED BLUE AND WHITE POTTERY JUG, PERSIA, 12TH/ 13TH CENTURY
of piriform on a long splayed foot with flaring neck and strap handle, incised and pierced with a large band of inscription around the upper body on a ground of scrolling vegetation, the neck with a band of lozenge motifs, all under a white glaze with cobalt-blue splashed lines, French auction house label to base.

H: 18.3cm

Provenance
Ader, Paris, 25 April 1963 (according to label on base).

Inscriptions: 'izz da'im wa al-sa'ada[h] ..., 'Perpetual glory and happiness ...'.

The label on the base suggests that this jug was one of the pieces found at Gurgan in the mid 20th Century. Another comparable Kashan jug without inscriptions found during the excavations is in the Victoria & Albert Museum (C.155-1977). A very similar jug to the present lot is in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (29.160.1).
