L’opera, per le sue peculiarità, va ascritta alla stretta cerchia di Annibale Carracci, ovvero a quella generazione di artisti cresciuti al suo cospetto e che esercitarono la pittura seguendo il suo esempio. Tra i vari lavori del maestro, un utile confronto alla tesi attributiva lo ritroviamo confrontando l’opera in esame con "Testa virile", 1595 ca, olio su tela, National Gallery of Art di Washington, oppure la miniatura “Autoritratto”, conservata agli Uffizi di Firenze.

Due to its peculiarities, the work is ascribed to the close circle of Annibale Carracci, that is to that generation of artists who grew up in the presence of him and who practiced painting following his example. Among the various works of the master, a useful comparison to the attribution thesis can be found by comparing the work in question with "Virile Head", ca 1595, oil on canvas, National Gallery of Art in Washington, or the miniature "Self-portrait", preserved at the Uffizi in Florence.
