Rare edition printed in Macau, authored, according to Couling (Encyclopaedia Sinica, p. 208), by one of the most eminent sinologists of the 19th century, who devoted himself passionately, for 30 years of his life, to the study of the Chinese language. A member of the Royal Asiatic Society and the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, he was highly regarded within the Chinese intellectual community itself.
