AN ICON «MOTHER OF GOD - SOOTHE MY SORROW» Russia, second half of the 19th century

Iconography of “Sooth my Sorrow” has been known since the beginning of the 17th century: its main characteristic is the hand of the Mother of God, with fingers in the traditional blessing sign, held against the side of her head. Many miraculous healings are attributed to this icon.
The decorated cartouche contains the text of the troparion to the Mother of God. There is a handwritten text on the back: «In 1797, 4 day of March, according to a promise, the Moscow merchant’s wife Agripina Karlova made a silver oklad ... this image soothe my sorrow».
