LEAR EDWARD: (1812-1888) English Artist, Illustrator and Poet.
A good A.L.S., Edward Lear, two pages, 8vo, Duchess Street, Portland Place, 25th June 1877, to a gentleman. Lear states that, upon his return from Surrey, he has found his correspondent's Book of Bosh and 'hasten to thank you for it & for your dedication of it to me the Father of Nonsense'. He continues 'I have not time to look at it much just now, but I thought at a glance, the two ladies going down into the cellar very funny'. With blank integral leaf. A couple of very light, minor ink smudges to a few letters of the text and signature, VGThe Book of Bosh was published anonymously in 1875 and is described as containing 'amusing and instructive Stories in Rhyme'. Later editions appeared in the 1890s and the title was re-used for an anthology of Lear's own lyrics and prose in 1975.Lear, the English artist, illustrator, musician, author and poet, is known today largely for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose and especially his limericks, a form he popularized.
