ESTHER'S ROLL MANUSCRIBE ON PARCHMENT Probably Ancona, second half of the 18th century
The upper edge is serrated and richly decorated with flowers and painted animals (various birds with plumes, lions, reindeer, butterflies). A very rare object with typically Italian decoration in cheerful and shimmering colours, evoking the Italian splendour of the Baroque period.
The text has 19 columns of 18 lines each. The scroll is made of turned wood (upper part missing). A separate original scroll containing the blessings that precede and follow the reading of the Megillah accompanies the scroll, as was the custom in Italy. It is also decorated with the same painted floral motifs. Some wear and tear.
