The Jewish community of Debrecen has a long history. Initially, a few merchants settled there around 1780. An official community was established in 1852. The community grew and many synagogues, schools, hospitals and other institutions were established. It reached its peak in the 1920s when it represented around 20% of the city's population. It became an important part of the local life and economy, and included many doctors, journalists, lawyers and entrepreneurs. Half of the community was exterminated during the Holocaust. Today, the Jewish community of Debrecen has about 1500 members, which makes it the second largest Jewish community in Hungary.
