EMILE FRANÇOIS CHAMBON (1905-1993) Storm
signed ‘E. Chambon 48’ (upper right)
oil on cardboard
40 x 32.5 cm
Executed in 1948

A Swiss painter and illustrator, Emile Francois Chambon was close to cubist painters such as Roger de Fresnaye and Jean-Louis Gampert. He adopted, however, his own style, especially after his first visit to the Louvre in 1928, where he discovered the works of Rembrandt, Rubens and Géricault.

Chambon is known for his thoughtful yet very instinctive compositions, the harmonies of blue, green, brown, and grey, his touch of humour and his geometrisations, which are sometimes exaggerated.
