The smallness of the people fighting the floods is contrasted with the grandeur of the architecture and, above all, the great bronze horseman.
This work is often considered the best of Benois’ illustrational work. Benois kept working on these illustrations until 1916. The German 1922 edition has therefore more illustrations than the original set (Cf.: Russian Book Art, 1904-2005 : A Selection from the LS Collection / documented by Albert Lemmens and Serge-Aljosja Stommels. Александр Николаевич Бенуа начал работать над иллюстрациями к «Медному всаднику» ещё в 1903 году и трудился над ними в течении следующих двадцати лет, создав целый цикл из рисунков, заставок и концовок. Впервые иллюстрации вышли в 1904 году в журнале «Мир искусства». Готовя к печати издание 1920- ых годов, Бенуа выполнил ряд рисунков, дополнивших серию 1916-го года, разработал макет издания и его внешнее художественное оформление.
