SPECIAL SESSION

IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF HONG KONG TOMMY LAM - ASIAN ART

1 - 100

Mr. Tommy Lam's collection is one of the most important private collections of Asian art, highlighting his unique and top quality jade pieces. For the first time, after a long career as a collector, he presents an exclusive sample of his large collection.

Mr. Tommy Lam is a successful businessman, gemologist and philanthropist specializing in jewelry and a member of the Hong Kong Jade Chamber of Commerce (香港玉器商會). His appreciation for Chinese culture has prompted him to participate since the 1980s continuously in charitable activities, highlighting donations in education with the development of schools and teaching materials. Likewise, his restless mind has led him to achieve multiple achievements and trophies in various hobbies, including sport fishing, traditional garden design, golf and as a sports racing driver.

Another of his interests is the history of China, which is why he took up collecting Chinese art in the 1980s, leading him to obtain various items of Chinese culture ranging from the Neolithic period to the end of the Qing dynasty. Over the course of these 40 years he has studied and inspired more people to share this interest as a national pride.

Jade ring with horses, Ming-Qing dynasty

Greenish-white Hetian jade archer's ring (板指) (青白玉). The outside is decorated with a relief of horses in different postures. The shape of the ring has a narrower centre and a rounded upper edge. It is in very good condition.

Horses played an important role in China in terms of growth and protection. They were so fundamental that their figure was associated with status, talents, good luck and power. Furthermore, the fact that the material used is jade shows that it is made with a meaning.

This type of ring is placed on the pulling finger which is the thumb of the right hand to hook the string when practising archery. Over time they have become more decorative than functional. Other jade jewellery for men included pendants and belts.

Provenance: Important collection of Tommy Lam, Hong Kong, from 1980.

Size: 3.1 x 3.6 cm; Weight: 45 g
