Colonial school, Mexico, 17th century. Virgin of Bethlehem. Oil on canvas. The theme of the Virgin of Bethlehem must be framed within the so-called Virgins of Tenderness, which bursts into Marian art in the Gothic period with great force as a response to that Franciscan-rooted naturalism that leads to representing Mary not as the throne of Jesus, but as the Mother of the Divine Child, in loving and varied attitudes, ranging from the Virgin lying on her bed caressing the Child, or the Virgin nursing Jesus or carrying him in her arms while he caresses her face with her hand, or the Virgin of Bethlehem who holds him in her arms lovingly wrapped in swaddling clothes or naked on them, or the rest in the flight to Egypt. In this case, the mother hugs the child and he caresses her mother's face with her right hand. The detail of the crowns of both and the jewels they wear stands out. The scene is represented in a frame with Solomonic columns at its sides and a legend at the bottom. Reengineered. 92 x 73 cm.
