Colonial school, Peru, 18th century. Circle of Bernardo de Legarda (Royal Audience of Quito, 1700-1773). Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Sculpture in carved, polychrome and gilded wood. It presents analogies with the Virgin of Quito on the main altar of the church of San Francisco, in Quito. 44 x 22 x 14 cm. With faults. Bernardo de Legarda is a sculptor and painter who stands out as one of the most versatile artists of viceregal Ecuador. Along with the indigenous Manuel Chili “Caspicara”, he is one of the main exponents of the so-called “Escuela Quiteña” during the 18th century. This School received a marked influence from European Baroque art, through the religious of the various Catholic orders such as Dominicans, Mercedarians and Franciscans mainly, who arrived together with the Spanish conquerors and allowed to create a large number of works of art of religious characterization .
