Exceptional oil on ivory plaque, Spain, 19th century
Representing the "Musical Angels singing to the Sacred Heart of Jesus", it depicts a scene in which a choir of singing angels praises the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. Signed Tomás Díaz Valdés, disciple of Vicente López Portaña and considered the best miniature painter in Spain in the 19th century, mentioned by Ossorio and Bernard in the Biographical Gallery of Spanish Painters of the 19th century. Other miniatures stand out, such as one made in 1871 for the Promotion of the Arts and another important miniature exhibited at the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1878. Provenance: old Baldesano collection, with an old Civil War Confiscation label at the back. After the Spanish Civil war, these works were returned to their rightful owners. Since 1939, part of the collection of Princess Mercedes of Baviera in the Baviera-Borbón palace in Cuesta de la Vega, Madrid, until 1972. Plaque size: 16.5 x 12 cm.
