16th Century. Responsa of the Maharshal – Lublin, 1594

She'elot u'Teshuvot Maharshal – Halachic responsa by Rabbi Shlomo Luria, Av Beis Din of Lublin, renowned author of Yam Shel Shlomo.

The opening pages include a few early marginal notes in Ashkenazic script.

Rabbi Shlomo Luria (c. 1510–1574), known as the Maharshal, was one of the greatest halachic authorities of the Acharonim. He was born in Brisk or Poznań, and taught Torah in Brisk, Ostroh, and Lublin, where he is also buried.

Among his distinguished disciples were: the Sma" (Sefer Me'irat Einayim), the Mateh Moshe, the author of Shu"t Masas Binyamin, the Kli Yakar, and others.

His contemporary, Rabbi David Gans, wrote in Tzemach David:

“The great luminary and wonder of the generation, by whose light all nations walk, and from whose waters all Jewish communities drink.”
