EGYPTIAN GLASS AND STEATITE MALE HEAD
New Kingdom, Ca. 1550 - 1069 BC. A glass and steatite male head, probably from a ushabti, with a dark red glass face and neck set against a black steatite wig. The facial features are finely shaped, with a rounded forehead, outlined eyes, a broad nose, and a gently curved mouth. The cheeks are subtly rounded. The wig is symmetrically arranged with parallel incised lines running vertically along the sides and across the top, extending down to the shoulders. The underside is flat. A similar example sold for £198,00 at Bonhams, Antiquities including Property from the Collection of Sir Daniel Donohue, 13 April 2011, Lot 10. Size: 25mm x 20mm; Weight: 10g Provenance: Prince collection, 1990s-2014; Ex. Bonhams, 13 April 2011, Lot 10; Ex. Sir Nevile Lubbock Collection (1839-1914), acquired in Egypt from the Keeper of the Cairo Museum in 1862-3. Thence by descent. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter. This piece is accompanied by an authentication statement from Simone Musso, consultant curator for Egyptian antiquities at the Stibbert Museum, Florence, Italy, member of the Nuri Archaeological Expedition.
