BYZANTINE TERRACOTTA OIL LAMP WITH LATIN CROSS
Ca. AD 300 - 500. A red terracotta oil lamp with a sunken discus displaying a Latin cross adorned with circular and rhomboid designs. The cross is flanked by two filling holes, and the discus is encircled by a decorative register. The nozzle is channelled and ends in a rounded spout, with a lug handle situated at the back. The lamp sits on a ring base with concentric circles within. For similar see (type): The Ashmolean Museum, Accession no. AN1980.76. Size: 145mm x 90mm; Weight: 170g. Provenance: Property of a London gallery, acquired on the German art market; Ex. West German private collection HH, before 2010. This piece is accompanied by German export license.
