1 page and a half in-8 on his letterhead and address "G. Eiffel, 37 Rue Pasquier, Paris".
In French.
"Madame, I really regret not being able to give you the written authorization that you ask me by your letter of June 27, but the upper floor of the Tower is exclusively reserved for scientific or military observations; apart from these, the access to the platform is only possible with me or my son-in-law Mr Salles. One of us will have the pleasure of accompanying you one of these mornings if you can be at the Tower by 9:1/2 a.m. at the Tower Company's pavilion, opposite that of the Gas Company, near the north pier of the Tower. Please accept, Madam, the assurance of my distinguished sentiments."
He could not grant her the "written" (autograph) authorization that she requested: "the upper floor of the Tower is exclusively reserved for scientific or military observations; outside of these, access to the platform can only be made with me or with my son-in-law Mr. Salles.
